Building the Landfill

When an area of the landfill is filled, it is covered with a layer of soil and then a three-layer synthetic cap. The cap then is covered with two feet of soil and the soil is seeded to control erosion. The cap helps control landfill gas and odors and prevents water from entering the waste. This means that over time, a capped area of the landfill will become dry and will no longer produce wastewater or landfill gas.

Alliance Landfill uses a rigorous waste-screening program to restrict the disposal of unauthorized materials. Unauthorized wastes may include hazardous wastes, liquid wastes, untreated medical wastes, and waste loads that include radioactive materials. All employees are trained, and continuously receive training updates in the proper observation, identification and handling of waste.

Residual waste disposal service is provided to commercial and industrial customers. Commercial and industrial residual waste is identified and profiled prior to acceptance. The profile indicates if any special handling requirements are necessary during the shipment and disposal of these wastes. Certain wastes require laboratory testing to ensure the waste is acceptable for disposal under PADEP regulations.
